Steve Faulkner has been having an indepth look at the accessibility of the new Chrome. "Google have launched their new browser, I like many other people have been very keen to install and use it. My first impression is it seems very slick, fast, has cool features such as speed dial and its intuitive to use for mouse users. I noticed yesterday that people on the Window Eyes user mailing list were discussing it and whether they could use it. And David Bolter asked the question ?Is Chrome accessible?? So I decided to do some testing of Google Chrome. Here is a quick rundown of the accessibility support I found in Google Chrome." Read the full article to see more... "How many times have you been asked this question: if you had to choose, which would you prefer to be: deaf or blind? The question illustrates the misconception that deafness is in some way the opposite of blindness?as though there?s some sort of binary representation of disability. When we look at accessible design for the deaf, it?s not surprising to see it addressed in a similar fashion." Lisa calls for socially-conscious designers to do more for Deaf culture in our web design and development. Saved By: Lachlan Hardy | View Details | Give Thanks

I have said on numerous occasions that there is no simple checklist that, when followed, will give you an accessible site without fail. There are simply too many variables. But, what do you do when you want to create accessible pages and you have dozens or even hundreds of developers who (like most of their peers) have little to no experience with accessibility? Surprisingly many tools exist on the web that can help your site become more inviting and easier to use. By now, you are probably familiar with the free tools offered by Flickr, del.icio.us, or YouTube for embedding images, tags, and videos on webpages. I highly recommend experimenting with these. Here is a comprehensive list of some perhaps lesser-known but equally useful tools for your site. This list can also be found at http://del.icio.us/cpretlow. In this article I want to point out the reasons why progressive enhancement is a very clever way of developing software and give you some tips and tricks how to develop when it comes to applying it. I am a strong believer in progressive enhancement and had my fair share of criticism for it as a lot of people neither consider it a need nor an easy technique to apply ? it is often seen as a unnecessary overhead rather than a safety precaution. Matches accessibility experts with companies that would like a brief review of their site for accessibility. In return, the site owner is asked to contribute a minimum of $500 to The John Slatin Fund. John was a wonderful man and a friend. This project will raise awareness of accessibility and help his wife Anna cover some of the expenses associated with his long illness. Spread the word.
